Neural Manipulation

What is neural manipulation and what does it do?

Manual Therapy by Emmanuelle
Neural manipulation (NM) examines mechanical relationships between the cranium-spine hard frame and the dura and neural elements. It provides assessment and treatment approaches to address restrictions of the dural and neural components not commonly focused on musculoskeletal symptoms. NM identifies and releases local nerve restrictions, while at the same time it examines the effect these local fixations have on the rest of the body. By accessing this relationship, NM resolves the more comprehensive (global) dysfunctional patterns.

French osteopath Alain Croibier collaborated with Jean-Pierre Barral to develop NM. Comparative studies found NM beneficial for various disorders such as:

  • Lower Back Pain & Sciatica
  • Headaches & Migraines
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Joint Pain
  • Digestive Disorders
  • Post-Operative Scar Tissue Pain
  • Swallowing Dysfunctions
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Whiplash Injuries
  • Birth Injuries
  • Neuralgia & Neuritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Sprains & Traumatic Lesions
  • Concussion & Traumatic Brain Injuries & More

What to Expect From a Session

How long will it take to see improvement?

Since every client is unique, every session will be different. It is not uncommon for some clients to acknowledge the improvement in just two visits, while others, although rare, may need months of therapy before seeing improvements. Usually, some improvement is seen within 4-6 visits. Improvement rates also depend on the severity of your condition and how long you have been suffering. The longer you’ve had your problem and the more severe it is will increase the time needed for treatment before you see improvements.

How often do I need to come for treatment?

Usually, once every two weeks is a good frequency. Emmanuelle will work with you to determine the best frequency for you.

Do any of these therapies hurt?

All therapies used by Emmanuelle are gentle. While Emmanuelle will be in contact with your body and manipulating the soft tissues where restrictions are located, at no time will any of these techniques hurt you. On the contrary. Each technique performed by Emmanuelle is meant to be gentle enough so as not to create pain yet it will have a profound effect on your healing. No pain no gain does not apply here for a successful outcome.

I didn't feel much during my session. Why not?

Experiences vary from individual to individual and from session to session. Because of the gentle touch approach, you may not feel much. This does not mean that the changes aren’t profound. Oftentimes, after a few days of processing, you will start to feel a difference in your pain level or symptoms.

How should I prepare?

You will need to wear (or bring) light, loose clothing as you will remain dressed for the entire session. Do not bring a thick or tight sport bra or jeans as they are too thick for a proper feel of the tissues mobilized. Other than making sure you are dressed accordingly, nothing is required from you prior to your sessions. You will be given an intake form during your first visit to complete and review with Emmanuelle as part of your initial assessment.

How long does a session last?

Each session will last between 40 and 60 minutes depending on how much the body will be able to handle.

Why does the session time vary?

We always work with the body’s own pace. This gentle therapy works best when we listen to the body’s needs vs. pushing our own agendas. We want to create a partnership with the body. It is best done by listening to what it needs.
